Founder Legacy Films
Every company has an official history. Almost none have the real one: why the founder risked everything in the third year, what the first hire actually saw, which decision nearly ended it, and what it cost at home. A founder legacy film is a private legacy film about the person behind the enterprise, made as a documentary, not as corporate communications.
What the film preserves
The origin, told by the one who lived it, in the places where it happened. The reasoning behind the decisions that shaped decades. The failures that mattered more than the successes, which official histories always omit and successors always need. The character: how the founder thinks out loud, argues, laughs, concedes. A pitch deck can be archived. Judgment cannot, except like this.
This is not a corporate video, and the difference shows immediately. There is no messaging, no brand review, no interview lit like a conference stage. It is cinema about a person who happened to build something, made with the same craft and restraint as any serious documentary.
When founders commission
Almost always at a transition. A succession, when the next generation takes over and needs more than the org chart. An exit, when the company changes hands but the story should not leave with it. Stepping back, when there is finally time to tell it properly. The moment of transition is exactly when the origin story is most at risk of dispersing, and exactly when it is most valuable to the people inheriting the result.
Just as often, the commission comes from the family rather than the founder. Adult children commissioning the film ahead of the sale closing, or a milestone birthday, as the one gift a person who has everything does not have.
Inside the family enterprise
Where the company is a family company, the founder's film often grows into something larger: a film about the enterprise across generations. That is its own kind of commission, described here.
A founder legacy film is commissioned the way every IKONA film is commissioned: a private conversation, story development, production, the editorial months, a private premiere. The process is described in full on the commission page. Commissions begin in the high five figures.
